California Beauty and Historical Gold Rush – Past and Present

SacramentoDay 1 – Arrival in San Francisco
Fly from your home to the iconic city of San Francisco. Your guide and motorcoach will meet you at the airport for your transfer to your hotel on the wharf for a two night stay. A festive Welcome Dinner is included this evening.    


Day 2 – City by the Bay and Alcatraz too!
Enjoy a guided city tour this morning as you view neighborhoods, Twin Peaks, Chinatown and Union Square plus Golden Gate Park and more. Following your tour, board a boat for Alcatraz to view the famous island and its infamous prison. Return to your hotel or set about exploring during a leisurely afternoon.    


Day 3 – Napa Valley wine Train and a drive to Fort Bragg
Set off early this morning to Napa in the heart of wine country. We’ll catch the train that will take you through this scenic area plus enjoy a wonderful gourmet lunch, complete with wine paring. Upon disembarkation, we board our motorcoach for a ride northward to the Mendocino coast and Fort Bragg. Check into your hotel for a three night stay.

Day 4 – The charming Mendocino coast, galleries and architecture
The morning finds you on a scenic tour of one of the nation’s most cherished Pacific coastlines. From the time of early settlement and through history, this area has been preserved for all to view. Enjoy the scenery (and possibly a whale or two). There is a walking tour of this artsy village of Mendocino, known for its galleries and quaint architecture – this is the town used for a number of films including the TV series “Murder She Wrote.”


Day 5 – The Skunk Train in all its Glory!
You will love this day as we board the famous skunk train for a 5 hour excursion that includes dinner this evening. Why the name? In early days, it smelled of odorous diesel fuel and the name has stuck, although the diesel is much improved. Winding its way through the forest, over some thirty bridges and through tunnels and redwood groves, you will enjoy every beautiful moment. A Bar-b-Que dinner is included on board.

Day 6 – Sacramento and the California Capital
Sit back and relax as we journey through forested lands towards the central California Sacramento Valley. We travel past Clear Lake and over the sumptuous agricultural area of the valley before reaching the capital city. A special visit to the Jelly Belly factory – President Reagan’s favorite confection, is on the agenda before we check into your hotel for a five night stay.


Day 7 – Old Sacramento and gold mining history
We’ll be treated to a walking tour of Old Sacramento this morning. This four square block district was the commercial district during the gold rush of 1849. It still features wooden sidewalks and cobblestone streets plus museums, shops and restaurants that preserve the character of the era. After lunch, take a trip to Coloma to a gold mine and stop at Fort Sutter State Park where the gold was discovered. Lunch in historic Placerville is included today.

Day 8 – Yosemite National Park and Bridal Veil Falls
Get prepared for beauty at its’ utmost. We drive southward to Yosemite National Park and the valley which features El Capitan and the wonderful Bridal Veil falls. There is time to explore this special place and enjoy the solitude before we return to Sacramento this afternoon. (This is a long day but well worth it!)

Day 9 – Beautiful Gardens and an afternoon of Fun
This is a leisurely day as we do a walking tour of the beautiful capitol and a guide will relate the history created in California. We also take in the Capitol Park and Gardens surrounding the capitol which includes the World Peach Rose Garden plus trees and plantings from around the world along with statuary of important California memorials. The afternoon s at leisure to explore Old Sacramento nearby or walk along the river or maybe just take a nap!


Day 10 – South Lake Tahoe and a cruise on Emerald Bay
Just a hours ride from Sacramento up scenic Hwy 50, we make our way to famous Lake Tahoe. The first stop is the marina and we board a boat for a two hour excursion of beautiful Emerald Bay completely narrated. Following lunch we then proceed to Heavenly Valley for a ride on the gondola that ascends nearly thousands of feet up the mountain for spectaculars views and a panorama will fill you with awe. Return to Sacramento to refresh for a special Farewell Dinner this evening.

Day 11 – Home again – home again
You are up early for a departure at the Sacramento airport to return to your home in Canada.


The tour includes: lst class transportation from San Francisco CA, to Sacramento via Fort Bragg, 10 nights 3 Star or better accommodations, porterage for one suitcase, all full breakfasts each morning, 3 dinners and 2 lunches, state and national park admission fees, attractions as stated, fees and taxes, 3 walking tours, services of a full time tour guide and a complimentary tour for the tour director/escort.

Tour does not include airfare, meals and attractions not stated, items of a personal nature and gratuities for guide and driver.
